The Windward Orchid Society’s spring show opens Friday with thousands of orchids, flowers and plants on display and for sale.

“Symphony of Orchids” also offers talks throughout the day on growing cattleya and honohono, as well as demonstrations of corsage-making and repotting (plus free used pots). Ceramic planters, planting media, pots and corsages also will be on sale.

The show runs from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday in King Intermediate School gym. Admission is a $2 donation.

“This is the 29th year that we’re doing it,” said society president Dot Sakamoto. “We will have orchid displays from about five different orchid societies on the island and lots of orchids for sale.

“This is generally the thing that we try to provide to the community every year. It’s going to be a challenge for our club to be successful, so we hope the community comes and helps us out.”

One of the draws every year is the honohono orchid.“It’s always the biggest seller during the show.”

Interested buyers are advised to come early, as the best plants tend to go quickly. Bargain hunters can return Sunday afternoon for special discounts on selected unsold plants.

The show opens Friday morning with the presentation of the mayor’s trophy to the grand prize display winner, selected by the American Orchid Society judges. A limited supply of WOS T-shirts will be on sale through the weekend.
