Two decades ago, McDonald’s of Hawaii commissioned renowned Hawaii artist Martin Charlot to create a mural for the company’s restaurant at Windward City Shopping Center, and Kaneohe customers have enjoyed it ever since.

Now Charlot, a former Waiahole resident, has created a keepsake hardback book edition of his mural, which will be celebrated with a reception from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the restaurant. Charlot will be there and, hopefully, so will many of the original models for his mural, Hawaiian Folkways. Watermark Publishing is actively seeking Charlot’s models to invite them. Former models and their families are asked to call the publisher at 534-7170.

Over the 17 years since the mural’s installation, the artist has lost touch with many of the friends and casual acquaintances who posed for it. Some were Castle High students of Ron Bright; other were fire-fighters, police officers, members of Hope Chapel Kaneohe, etc. Another notable mural poser is the current governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger.

The 5-by-24-foot mural depicts a day in the life of Waiahole Valley with models acting out more than 100 proverbs. “When I saw someone who had the look I wanted,” Charlot explained,“I would ask him or her to choose, or let me choose, a proverb that they could act out on the spot for me to photograph. If someone acted out a negative proverb that I wanted, I would also seek a positive proverb in which to include them, thereby balancing that person’s energy and imagery with the work.”

The book is titled Local Traffic Only: Proverbs Hawaiian-Style, and a portion of proceeds from copies sold at the reception will go to Ronald McDonald House Charities of Hawaii. The public is invited.

Charlot also will sign his book from noon to 1 p.m. that day at Borders Kaneohe at Windward Mall.
