The brand-new, student-designed playground at Aikahi Elementary School has already proven to be an exceptional investment, even as it needs more funding.

“The playground is filled with kids every day,” said Melanie Bailey, PTSA vice president.

Built from high-quality engineered lumber, the playground is the culmination of many volunteers and contributors. And though fundraising efforts and donations have helped to pay down the costs, there remains a debt of about $20,000.

“We still owe some money on it, and the personalized tiles are to help pay down that debt and also help maintain the program,” she said, noting that about 100 tiles still are available to buy at $50 each. The personalized or legacy tiles are placed in areas on the playground such as the dragon wall, gazebo and next the water fountain. The next big tile-making day is 3 p.m. Jan. 15 in the cafeteria.

“We have a bunch of tiles already incorporated on the playground,” said Kathy Bryant, project coordinator and PTSA co-president. “As we continue to add pieces to the playground we incorporate areas to have tiles. For the time being we really want to encourage all the families involved. And it’s special because that legacy tile will always be there.”

The group also has set a benefit golf tournament for Feb. 19 at Koolau Golf Club, complete with buffet dinner and silent auction. Tickets are $40 in advance, and all proceeds go to the playground fund.
