Kailua, Castle and Kalaheo high schools athletic directors invite all soccer families to the Kailua High cafeteria Oct. 13 for a program for parents of student-athletes.

The free event begins with dinner at 7 p.m., followed by a workshop at 7:30 on “The Second-Goal Parent: How Parents Can Raise Winners in Life through Sports.” The Positive Coaching Alliance (PCA) will present the workshop.

PCA is “a national movement to transform the culture of youth sports,” explained Ramona Takahashi, Kailua athletic director.“For coaches (the goal) is to build a positive sports culture. For parents, it is to support a positive sports culture, focusing on how your child can learn a life lesson through the sport experience.”

Deadline is today (Oct. 6) to register for the first such workshop co-hosted by the three schools. For details,e-mail Takahashi at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).

At a Kaneohe workshop last year for adults who work in youth sports, PCA Hawaii coordinator Gary Pacarro said:“We take the win-at-all-costs mentality out of sports and show there are two goals for competition: how to compete through sportsmanship and how to know that the games we play offer so many life lessons that youngsters can take away from it.”
