An outer-space fun awaits families Friday at Windward Community College, and hundreds of inquisitive minds are welcome.

Working on the theme of"Feed your mind with a science thought,” the second annual “A Taste of Science Family Activity Night"will unfold from 6 to 8 p.m. in and around Hale Palanikila with educational activities, stargazing shows, a super telescope and talks with a real live rocket scientist - all free to Windward parents with their kids.

“We want to get people to play with science,“said coordinator Jacquie Maly,“but we know we won’t turn anyone into a brain surgeon that night.“She then lists a dozen hands-on experiments on the menu for visitors young and old: disorientation (drawing with a mirror),making gak (Nickelodeon slime),a microscopic look at sand, floating ping pong balls, magnets, Newton’s law with string, making flying saucers, etc. “We will also be among the first public groups to see the Lanihuli Observatory and its telescope,” added Maly, a retired WCC science professor.

The resident rocket scientist is 1976 Castle High Jake Hudson who manages WCC’s NASA Flight Training Aerospace Educational Laboratory and keeps the Imaginarium going. Hudson, who teaches physics at the Priory, also serves as safety officer for monthly amateur rocket launchings at WCC. He will answer questions, show off the NASA lab and even sign autographs upon request.

Sponsors are PACT Kaneohe Community Family Center and the college, with help from the Castle KEY Club and King Intermediate’s new Builders Club - both part of Kiwanis. To assure there are enough goodie bags, call ahead to 235-7747.
