WCC Honors Longtime Arts Advocate

Del.icio.usIn a tribute to Camille Almy and the arts in general, Windward Community College has named Paliku Theatre’s second-floor mezzanine after the longtime director of musicals at her Kailua church and elsewhere.
The official dedication was April 30, when a plaque was presented to the theater at an afternoon reception. The event also served to unveil Pieces of Sky, a 16-foot-long, eight-panel painting by the late John Wisnosky, donated by his family and now installed in the Camille H. Almy Lobby. Wisnosky, who died in 2006, chaired the UH art department for two decades.
Almy is best remembered for her series of musical comedies that she produced with the Christ Church Uniting choir. She helped establish the Windward Arts Council and led many art groups and causes, including the Mayor’s Commission of Culture and the Arts. She also performed professionally with Hawaii Opera Theatre, Hawaii Opera Players and in local drama productions. She died in 1996.
Performing at the dedication were Almy’s friends Beebe Freitas, Mihana Souza, members of the Chamber Music Hawaii Spring Wind Quintet and others.
According to Tom Holowach, who manages Paliku Theatre, A.T. “Red” Miller of Kaneohe “was the driving force” behind the four-year campaign that raised the required $100,000 to establish an endowment fund and name a university property after Almy. The plaque has names of the donors.
