Reports on the Army Corps of Engineers’ inspection of two old munitions sites in Windward Oahu are available through Friday at the Kaneohe Library.

The ACE recently completed its inspections of Heeia Combat Training Area and Pali Training Camp the former used for small arms training during World War II, and the latter as a training and artillery impact area. They are being reviewed under the Department of Defense’s Munitions Response Site Prioritization Protocol to assess possible unexploded ordnance and if so, whether the ordnance and munitions should be removed.

The report contains evaluation criteria as to what’s there, ease of access and number of people living nearby. The Heeia site consists of about 200 acres in Heeia Kea and 2,254 acres in Waihee and Kaalaea valleys in Kahaluu. The Pali camp is comprised of about 4,400 acres at the foot of the Koolaus; of particular concern are 1,500 acres of Makalii and Maunawili valleys.

For more information or if you can provide more details about the sites, call Maj. Sally Hannan, 4380470.
