Springing from fall auditions at Applause Performance Academy in Wahiawa, the cast and crew from Diamond in the Rough Productions will dance their way over to Paliku Theatre in Kaneohe this weekend to present Babes in Toyland.

Although most of the 40 performers live in the Central and North Shore area, director Kristi Kashimoto-Rowbottom praises the friendly partnership with the Windward venue, which has a steep, viewer-friendly seating design. “It could be a problem with ticket sales,” she admitted, “but it hasn’t been, because there’s no bad seat in the house. Plus they’re so accommodating and lovely to work with.”

A villain, a fair maiden and a foreclosure threat play out on the stage, as young ruffians try to derail the young love of Mistress Mary Quite Contrary. Between Toyland, the dangerous Spider Forest and Mother Goose Land, there’s plenty of action in this holiday musical not to mention the Master Toymaker and his quirky assistants Grumio and Marmaduke.

Two Castle High students are cast as well: Chloe Amos is the featured ballerina doll who opens and closes the show, and James Denzer plays Inspector Marmaduke.

The curtain goes up on Toyland at 7:30 p.m. Friday, 2 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, and 2 p.m. Sunday at the Windward Community College theater. Tickets cost $23 and $13 and can be ordered online at showtix4u.com or call 1866-967-8167.
