Koolauloa Neighborhood Board has called a special meeting for 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Laie Elementary School to discuss the future of the community as proposed through the Envision Laie plan.

The July 30 agenda includes a presentation of the Envision group’s proposals, a public comment/question period and a board vote on whether to include the plan’s elements in the city’s upcoming review of its long-range sustainable communities plans.

The board recently reorganized with Junior Primacio taking over the chairmanship from Dee Dee Letts. New members include vice chairman Richard Fale, secretary Kela Miller and treasurer Moana Kaiau’u.

Timing is critical as the city Planning Advisory Committee will meet at 7 p.m. Aug. 5 at Queen Liliuokalani Children’s Center in Punaluu to discuss proposed changes to the land-use plan.

Envision Hawaii - developed by area residents, BYU-Hawaii, Polynesian Cultural Center, Hawaii Reserves Inc. and planning experts hired by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints - has concluded that “a possible solution for sustainability might be reached through growth.”

The Koolauloa Sustainable Communities Plan, which also was developed by community members and planners, states that the area’s role on Oahu is “to maintain its country character and to experience very little growth over the plan’s 20-year planning horizon.”
