After adopting the GED Prep program from Kalaheo High School in 2008, Windward United Church of Christ has now opened the tutoring program to all high school students interested in obtaining a GED certificate.

The free course provides tutoring, practice-test instructions and resources from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesdays through Thursdays during the school year. Students must have completed one semester of high school and have taken a GED screening test.

Prospective students and parents are welcome to visit the campus and meet instructor Vicki Owens, who understands what the DOE-sponsored service means to students.

“There are a lot of students who just never adapted to high school or large classes very well, or the chaos of a campus situation,” Owens said. “This program gives them a chance to earn a diploma in a way that they will have virtually one-on-one assistance.”

Course work at the church, located across from Aikahi Park Shopping Center, includes reading, writing and essay composition, social studies, science and math.

“It’s concentrated and is mostly pure academics,” Owens added. “The most amazing thing to me is the amount of knowledge these kids can acquire in such a short time. When the knowledge is there and the students are in a comfortable situation, they tend to integrate very well, learning quickly. Some students can be out in a few months; others take a little longer — but it is a high school diploma.”

Owens’ attitude is that the students, the course and the diploma are the only aspects that really matter, while their background is not relevant. “I learn as little about the background of each student as possible. I like to teach them as fresh, new individuals who are there because they want to be.

“I approach each of them with a positive attitude — and that is what I get back. Once the trust is there the sky is the limit.”
