That old-but-working refrigerator on the lanai could be worth $25 in cash and much more in energy savings, according to a new campaign by Hawaii Energy.

The bounty program will reward Windward residents who unplug and recycle up to one refrigerator, freezer and window air conditioner each, and aims at reducing electricity consumption, carbon dioxide emissions and dependence on fossil fuels.

Residents must notify Hawaii Energy at 537-5577 to coordinate a free pickup of the appliance. The participating recycler, Refrigerant Recycling, will provide a numbered application to be filled out and submitted to Hawaii Energy.

Hawaii Energy is a ratepayer-funded conservation and efficiency program administered by Science Applications International Corp. (SAIC) under contract to the state Public Utilities Commission.

According to the program, energy saved by recycling such old appliances is enough to run a new Energy Star model for eight months.
