Dentists Believe In Blood Drives

The Kailua dental office of Dr. KB Chun & Sons will host a blood drive from 8 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. Thursday, and to ensure its success, they shut down the office for the fourth annual event.

“We encourage our staff, patients and the entire Kailua community to donate blood,” said employee Nel Julian. “Our staff is here to socialize and assist the Blood Bank of Hawaii as needed.”

BBH parks its bloodmo-bile in front of the dental office, located at 444 Uluniu St., and the waiting room is used as a place where donors can relax before or after their donation. Tents are set up outside as an alternative place to relax.

“Our three doctors (all brothers) enjoy giving back to the community in which they have served for over 60 years,” she explained. “With two of our doctors having served in the armed forces, the Fourth of July weekend is an especially important occasion for them, not to mention the many deployments between both doctors.”

The office also provides donors with free drinks and food, including ice cream, waffle hot dogs and more. At past blood drives, the office gave out eco-friendly bags, personalized pens, toothbrushes and other items to donors. This year, the dentists also have a gift for the donors for their pint of blood.

“Each year we have increased our pint goal, and although it is a challenge,” said Julian, “the reward is not in the recognition we get as a dental office holding a blood drive, but in the selfless donors taking their time, during their Fourth of July weekend to provide the gift of life.”
