Kamehameha Schools has come through for the public libraries with a grant of $25,000 to buy materials for students in preschool through age 20 from primarily Native Hawaiian communities.

Kahuku and Waimanalo branches, both already located on school campuses, are among the nine branches selected statewide to share the grant from the Kamehameha Schools Public Education Support Division. The materials were centrally purchased earlier this year, and staff from the winning libraries helped to select the items, which included 830 volumes representing 385 different titles on a wide range of topics - from dictionaries to folktales.

“Ultimately patrons statewide will have the opportunity to place reserves on these books through our online catalog,” said state librarian Richard Burns, former Waimanalo branch manager. Burns noted that the donation promotes lifelong learning, starting at the right age.
