A bike path mauka of Kamehameha Highway is being planned for Koolauloa, and groundbreaking is anticipated by the end of summer.

The path for both bicycles and pedestrians would stretch one-and-a-half miles between the Kahawainui and Malaekahana bridges. It would be a meandering, 8-foot-wide path created and executed by a partnership of landowner Hawaii Reserves Inc., the Laie Community Association and area residents and businesses with donated land, labor and materials.

“Our goal with the Malaekahana bike path is to begin creating a region where cycling and walking are made easy, safe and accessible for all ages - especially for our school kids,” said HRI president Eric Beaver.

The Envision Hawaii project developed from public workshops which generated ideas about a network of connecting paths and sidewalks safely away from cars. (The path would be about 15 feet from the highway.)
