Cape Canaveral has moved to King Intermediate School, and the rockets are about to blast off.

Titled “3-2-1 Blast Off!,” the community’s first Family Activity Night of the school year will be in orbit from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday in King’s gym, and its open to area families and amateur astronauts of all ages.

Free hands-on science activities will help the curious navigate the heavens in more ways than one. The Hawaii Astronomy Society and the UH Institute for Astronomy will provide telescopes for viewing the night skies. Windward Community College’s Hokulani Imaginarium manager will share her knowledge, and area Cub Scouts will launch a few exploratory rockets.

“It’s called seeking a better understanding of the solar system and the size of the planets,” explained Melany Melakea, program coordinator for Kaneohe Community Family Center which is sponsoring the event. “We want to provide enrichment in education, especially hands-on and experiential things, in a fun and freeing sort of environment.”

Other resources and exhibits are planned to help with family concerns, such as how parents can best help their children with homework. And preschoolers will not be bored.
