The ocean’s floor can yield secrets to the past, and geophysicist Gerard Fryer will share it all with the public at 1 p.m. March 29 at Windward Community College.
As part of the spring Community Forum in Chemistry, Fryer will discuss “Giant Hawaiian Landslides and Tsunamis” in Hale Imiloa 111. The one-hour program will reveal what scientists found when they mapped the sea floor around the Hawaiian Islands - debris from truly gigantic landslides.
They speculated that such landslides generated devastating tsunamis. By identifying and studying the deposits, researchers now believe these events were driven by climate change.
Fryer will tell his audience why he doesn’t expect another giant landslide “until after the next Ice Age.”
At the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center since 2005, he also has served as a research seismologist at Princeton University and UH Manoa. He frequently advises on tsunami matters for local civil defense offices.
