Free Red Cross Training To Emphasize Mutual Aid

To raise awareness about the importance of mutual aid when environmental disasters occur, Windward residents can join American Red Cross’ Episodic Training Nov. 12 and 19 in Kaneohe.

The free sessions run from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church at Ko’olau, 45-550 Kionaole Road. Sign up deadline is Nov. 1, and classes are limited to the first 30 people. Successful completion of both classes is required to earn a certificate. To register, call 739-8113.


Training covers the following topics:

* Disaster Services an overview of the Red Cross mission and what principles and values it follows.

* Disaster Assessment Basics the working procedure of Red Cross and how workers assess a disaster situation properly.

* Shelter Operations how to obtain knowledge of policies and procedures for setting up, running and closing a shelter during a disaster.

* Shelter Simulation transferring newly learned skills and abilities into practical situations.


Founded in 1917, Hawaii’s chapter of American Red Cross has kept as a main goal to help alleviate suffering from such disasters as floods, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions and earthquakes.

The nonprofit today is a leader in health and safety training, working with more than 4,000 volunteers in an efficient manner.
