With more than 3,000 new and used vinyl records and well over 5,000 new and used compact discs squeezed into its small storefront music shop on Kuulei Road, Hungry Ear would like to move it all out into its community of fans this week.

The store will celebrate its 31st anniversary Thursday through Saturday by slashing prices 20 or 30 percent, giving away any five vinyl LPs (that means “longplaying” to you youngsters) and selling hundreds more records and CDs for $1 each. (Neighboring merchants Coconut Grove, UDown and Oahu Glass also will have special sales to mark the event.)

“Hungry Ear is part of a dying breed of independent record store that thrives on the rabid music fan, rather than the casual mall customer,” explained Ward Yamashita, who owns the store with Dennie Chong. “People need a place where they can dig through bins and bins of records and CDs, not knowing what they may find.”

The partners also claim there’s a resurgence of vinyl record sales, including new vinyl releases by the likes of Pink Floyd, Jack Johnson and Radiohead. And if you want to play these gems, the store also stocks needles and turntable cartridges.
