The appearance of those all-too-familiar buttons in Kailua means one thing: the “I Love Kailua” block party is just around the corner.

The 19th edition of the annual town party - billed by Lani-Kailua Outdoor Circle as Oahu’s biggest family-friendly block party - will offer food and drink from more than 20 local restaurants, as well as crafts, plants, exhibits and demonstrations.

The party is scheduled for 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 17 on Kailua Road (which will be closed to vehicular traffic).

The event benefits LKOC and is funded by donations and the sale of the iconic “I Love Kailua” buttons. They can be purchased for a minimum contribution of $3 at First Hawaiian Bank and more than 30 local retailers including Longs and Hardware Hawaii. Commemorative T-shirts also will be sold to raise money for other LKOC projects.

As a way to add more of a local touch to the fundraising effort, LKOC opened the T-shirt design contest to students in grades 7-12 who attend school in Kailua. The winner collects $100 and has his or her art featured on the shirts.

Logo items from the yearly festival have become regular purchases by collectors, some of whom still have the milk caps, or POGs, with the “I Love Kailua” logo embla-zoned on the once-popular collectible game tokens.
