After watching fellow residents evacuate their homes from the threat of an approaching tsunami in March part of the same cataclysmic event that killed thousands in Japan Kailua community leaders recently came together with the goal of improving Windward Oahu’s disaster preparedness plans.

The effort resulted in the creation of a disaster preparedness fair scheduled from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Sept. 15 at Kailua Town Center, next to the Thursday Night Market. (See accompanying letter on this page.)

Leaders from Kailua Neighborhood Board, State Civil Defense and the city helped organize the event, which is aimed at informing local residents about the kinds of disaster threats they could face. The grassroots effort aims to put the people in charge of preparing for the next natural disaster, and organizers are hopeful that other communities will use the Kailua fair as a model.

Participants include the National Weather Service, NOAA, American Red Cross, Honolulu Fire Department and State Farm Insurance. For more information, call 2361234.
