A dinner, silent auction and awards presentation will highlight Ko’olaupoko Hawaiian Civic Club’s December launching of its newly published book, Distinguished Kama’aina of Kaneohe.

Events unfold from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. Dec. 17 at Kokokahi YWCA’s Atherton Hall on Kaneohe Bay Drive, where the club also will recognize the outstanding contributions of OHA trustee Haunani Apoliona and present the 2011 Helen C. Kane Award to Kona and Ed Pelekai of Kahaluu for their dedication, commitment and service to the club.

The volume highlights the achievements of all 24 kama’aina whom the club has honored since 2006 in fields of culture, commerce, history and heritage.

“This book project has been a labor of love, involving many research hours, tracking down of families and archival photos, personal interviews and design work,” said coordinator Mahealani Cypher. “It brings together historical figures, both contemporary and from the past, who give us a glimpse of Kaneohe from two centuries ago to the present.”

They are Elizabeth Lau, Dante Carpenter, Alice Hewett, Joe Pickard, Henry Wong, Bryan Clay, Harold B. Castle, Rev. Benjamin Parker, Joe Morgan, Evans Yim, Don Ho, Rosaline Morgan, Dr. Fred Reppun, Emily Kaui Zuttermeister, Ulysses Henry Jones, Abigail Kawananakoa, state Rep. Ken Ito, Jerry Santos, Ron Bright, Art Machado, Hank Iida and the Iida family, Rev. Bob Nakata, maestro Aaron Mahi and Edgar Jones, along with the club’s founding members Johnny Townsend, Isaac Kanakanui, George Cypher, Emily Zuttermeister and George Houghtailing.

Call 235-8111 or email .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) for reservations. Admission is a minimum donation of $10, which includes Hawaiian dinner and entertainment. The silent auction will support scholarships.
