Koolauloa community groups have united with the city to present the first Laie Sunset on the Beach, set for this Friday and Saturday at Kokololio Beach Park (formerly Kakela).

The event will include a movie each night, food, crafts, games, rides and plenty of entertainment, according to Esther Macy, planning committee member.

“We only had a few weeks to put it together, but it’s working out wonderfully,” Macy said, “and it’s totally affordable.” She noted that children can purchase an armband for $10, which allows unlimited rides; and the plate lunches are generous in size but only $7 each.

Proceeds from the event will benefit Kahuku High Project Graduation and the Koolauloa Children’s Chorus. Macy directs the chorus, which is planning a concert trip to Carnegie Hall next June.

The event is open from 2 to 10 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday. Films will be shown at dusk. Friday’s show is Game Plan with The Rock; Saturday is Nicolas Cage in National Treasure 2.

Sponsors are Turtle Bay Resort, BYUH and its print services, Hawaii Operating Engineers Local 3 and its Stabilization Fund, Koolauloa Community Health Center, Laie Inn, Polynesian Cultural Center, Laie Shopping Center merchants, HECO, Kimo’s Akamai Catering, Islander Transporter, Papa Ole’s, Digital Sports, Made in Laie, Akamai Catering, Kau Inoa and MTN Builders.
