Ola Loa Wellness founders Skya Boudousquie and Traci Potterf, both Kailua residents, will host a four-part culinary wellness series beginning Thursday at Kalama Beach Club for those needing extra help to stick with their new year’s resolutions on healthy eating.

“True Comfort Food: Quick and Easy, Local and Organic” cooking classes are designed to bring out the inner chef and dispel the myth that eating well is difficult, expensive and bland.

“Eating the way we teach is not only more pleasurable,” said Boudousquie, “but in the long run it saves you time and money, dramatically improving quality of life.”

“We call it ‘true’ comfort food because these dishes are comforting, from your taste buds to your emotions and the cells of your body, unlike most so-called ‘comfort foods’ that are pleasurable for the moment then lead to pain, fatigue and illness,” added Potterf, who earned a Ph.D. in medical anthropology at UC Berkeley.

On the menu are improved childhood favorites like chicken pot pie, pizza, enchiladas, chili and corn bread. Students will make these from organic ingredients sourced from local farmers.

Boudousquie and Potterf also will share where to find the best deals on local/organic produce, food-prep techniques, ways to look and feel your best, and why it’s true “you are what you eat.”

“You don’t have to give up your favorite dishes to be healthy. Just be smart about it and use the good stuff,” said Potterf. “Join us, and we’ll show you how!”

Classes will run from 6 to 9 p.m. Jan. 20, Feb. 17, March 17 and April 21 at the beach club, 280 N. Kalaheo Drive. Cost is $65 per class ($55 for beach club members) or $240 for the entire series ($200 members). Space is limited.
