Shopping centers in Kailua and Kaneohe will be taken over this weekend by officers of the law on a mission, all in the name of Hawaii’s special athletes.

The 10th annual Cop on Top fundraiser features the men and women of HPD climbing high on scaffolding in the parking lots of Aikahi Park and Kaneohe Bay shopping centers from 6 a.m. Friday until 2 p.m. Sunday.

It’s a way to “heighten” awareness and raise funds for Special Olympics Hawaii, which trains and supports more than 2,100 athletes across the state at a yearly cost of $1,044 each.

“Our Special Olympics athletes are the true heroes,” said police Sgt. Ben Moszkowicz. “They face overwhelming challenges every day, and donating our time for Cop on Top is just a small gesture that we can make to show our support and solidarity with these amazing individuals.”

The fundraiser also extends to all Walmart and Sam’s Club stores this year, as well as Hawaii Kai Shopping Center. Shoppers are urged to stop by any of these venues and contribute to the cause. For more information, call 943-8808.
