Shoppers who prefer unique, one-of-a-kind hand-crafted goods and clothing - made straight from the comforts of home - are now welcome at the new East Honolulu Clothing Company at Waimanalo Town Center.

Home of Double Paws Wear and Horsechicks Hawaii, the shop celebrated its grand opening in January, and owners Maurice and Andrea Fujie say their clothing company is anything but ordinary.

With a production studio right in the middle of the store, Andrea Fujie said customers can observe the creative process or take part in it by having a garment made especially for them.

“You can choose from fabrics and pick the cut, print and ink colors,” she said. “You can be as involved as you want.”

She described the store as “recycled ranch - Waimanalo style.” Discarded old hay feeders and utility sinks have become display cases and chainlink kennels have transformed into dressing rooms - all incorporating the “horse country” feel of the community.“It’s great. Everything is truly Waimanalo. I’m surrounded by things I love that remind me of people I love.”

They stock beautiful, locally made products as well as funky retro pop-culture items and gifts for the cowboy or cowgirl at heart.

“Artists and friends in the neighborhood drop off all sorts of things to our store. It’s a gathering spot, a real social gathering,” Fujie said, laughing. One item you won’t find anywhere else: Waimanalo wild chicken egg art.

“Egg collectors will really appreciate Waimanalo artist Dark Sevier’s ‘dragon eggs,’” she said. “He makes amazing mobiles and has very interesting, edgy eggs. Everyone stops to look at them. It’s definitely a conversation starter.”

In addition to their own line of jewelry, the store also carries intricate designs by Anita Johnson and Ruth Goldstein, and koa jewelry hand-crafted by Hawaiian Accessories, among others.

“You just have to see jewelry designer Gloria Brasuel’s latest creations,” Fujie added. “We’ve had to add a special ‘Waimanalo Bling’ section to display her fabulous new Swarovski crystal necklaces and earring sets.”

Fujie’s mother is creating knitted evening bags and shawls to add to the shop’s collection of whimsical bags and a new line of tailored, natural woven bags called “Twisted Orchid.”

EOCC recently launched its own brand of natural, vegan olive oil soaps with scents like jasmine, plumeria, tea and clover, citrus basil, lemon pikake, cafe mocha and cinnamon latte.

“These are wonderful moisturizing soaps that make a shaving cream-like lather.” Other hip bath and body product lines here are Miso Pretty, Dirty Girls, Boss Lady and Cute as Hell.

“It’s just very cool stuff made for and by very cool people,” she said.

The shop is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. For more information, call 259-7677 or visit www.easthonoluluclothingcompany.com
