A martial arts store opened its doors in Kaneohe in May, relocating its entire operation from Aiea to the foothills of the Koolaus.

KC Martial Arts Supplies is now at 45-525 Luluku Road in the old MidWeek building where it sells uniforms, protective gear, training equipment, weapons, belts, MMA gear and more. The store focuses on items for traditional disciplines like judo and taekwondo. The way they see it, spokesman Bobby Chang explained, enough stores around the island already cater to “the MMA fad.”

“No one is doing traditional martial arts,” he explained, “so we want to stay true to who we are.”

The business got its start in 1985 when Bobby’s uncle Rex Chang borrowed $5,000 from his parents. The initial 600-square-foot martial arts inventory has grown enough to fill out the 2,000-squarefoot retail front in Kaneohe.

To give the business a name more than 25 year ago, Rex borrowed his brother’s initials. Over time the KC brand has included a printing facility and a Far East gift import company. In addition to the retail store on the ground floor, the rest of the warehouse houses KC Hawaii, a wholesale island souvenir business offering tiki mugs, aloha figurines (including a surfing Obama for the dashboard), honu memorabilia, lamps, tote bags, surfboard rugs and hula knickknacks.

KC Hawaii (visit kchawaii.com) opens once a year to the general public to reduce inventory, and Bobby Chang said the next warehouse sale is from 2 to 6 p.m. this Friday and 7 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday.

Hours for the martial arts shop at kcmartialartssupplies.com, are 9 a.m.-5:30 p.m. weekdays and 9:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday. For more, call 486-9002.
