Two recent college graduates from Windward Oahu had an idea to throw a three-hour party, and it turned into a $4,000 donation to the Red Cross for Japan disaster relief.

The women, Lehua Vermeesch of Ahuimanu and Wendy Fragale of Kailua, both work as servers by the pool at the new Waikiki Edition on Ala Moana Boulevard. The hotel supported them in their April 22 “Art from the Heart” fundraiser on the hotel grounds.

They planned an evening of cocktails (with alcohol donated), pupus (from the hotel) and a silent auction of local artwork, with a $10 donation requested for admission.

“Our main form of publicizing it was facebook (created an event page) and email,” explained Vermeesch, via email. “Also, word of mouth to people we knew or thought might be interested.”

Vermeesch, who has a business degree from HPU, discovered that she really enjoyed planning the event and seeing it through to success. But the main impetus was to reach out to Japan. “In Hawaii I think we all have some sort of connection with Japan,” she explained, “whether we know someone from there or we’re part-Japanese - or we just love sushi. We have a connection.”
