The Windward Wanderers are a group of artists who find their inspiration in Wind-ward’s scenic beauty - and now they want to let that beauty inspire you.

Their annual show at Ho’omaluhia Botanical Garden gallery is on display now through Feb. 27, showcasing 68 works by 14 artists in various media, including watercolor, acrylic, pastel, gouache, oil, clay, stoneware and wood.Viewing hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily.

“Inspiration is taken from the Windward scenes we enjoy every day,” said artist Linda Lau about this year’s theme, Windward Inspirations. “We rush to the window every morning to experience the dramatic skies of our sunrises and try to capture the glow on the Koolaus.

As J. R. R. Tolkien said, ‘Not all those who wander are lost.’”

The show is the result of Wednesday meetings in which about 10-15 members gather at various sites to work “en plein air.”

“Plein air painting means that we paint on location, endure the elements and try to capture the essence of the view in front of us,“explained Lau, who contributed several watercolor pieces to the show. “If it is really pouring rain, we often paint under cover at Kaneohe Yacht Club. We look for locations from Makapuu to Kualoa Ranch and e-mail each other to keep up with the weather.

“We paint from 9 a.m. to noon and then eat our brown bag lunches and critique our work - which usually consists of congratulating ourselves on creating a ‘masterpiece.’ All February, during our show, we can be found painting at Ho’omaluhia every Wednesday morning.”

The group has been meeting for more than 10 years and has also been exhibited in other venues since many of their seasoned artists also are active in the Windward Artists Guild and/or the Hawaii Watercolor Society.

The pieces at their current show are available for sale. Lau pointed out that prices are affordable as buyers will be dealing directly with the artists. On Wednesday mornings, artists also make inexpensive matted works of their original art available.
