A small but sincere group of Kailua teenagers is planning a black-tie catered dinner and silent auction Dec. 4 for its Invisible Children Club. Now all they need is a crowd to buy the $60 tickets and come on down to Makani Kai Helicopters at 130 Iolana Place near the airport from 5 to 9 p.m. that night.

Mahealani Schuman, president of the club at her Windward Oahu private school, is enthused and frank in her assessment of the event at this point: “The caterer and place we are renting tables and chairs from are all local Kailua businesses, who have given us a greatly discounted price,” she said in her pitch to Islander readers. “We have the venue, food, drinks, entertainment and many great gifts for the auction.”

But the main goal is support for the mission of the international Invisible Children organization to end the use of child soldiers in Joseph Kony’s rebel war and restore the Lords Resistance Army-affiliated communities to peace and prosperity in Central Africa.

Schuman, her five club members and teacher-adviser have been working for months to bring this fundraiser to reality, and they were heartened by recent political events. President Obama committed advisers and special forces personnel last month to help direct the Ugandan army’s fight against Kony, who is wanted by the International Criminal Court.

Back in Kailua, however, their school could not sponsor the event, since it’s off campus and serves alcohol. So getting the word out has been difficult for the students. For tickets and more information, call 6904633.
