The Windward District Spelling Bee will bring the best spellers from eight area schools together next Tuesday for a tense evening of wordsmithing.

The competition starts at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 7 in Wang Auditorium on the Le Jardin Academy (LJA) campus, featuring the student winner and runnerup from individual school bees.

“It’s a really, really nice event leading up to the state bee in March,” said Marcia Huber, LJA English teacher and district contest coordinator. She said LJA has hosted the district bee for the past 13 years.

Sponsored for the second year by the local media company aio, the Hawaii State Spelling Bee is coordinated by Sherie Char, who said 80 schools joined the spelling ranks this year. “We were excited to see so many public, private and charter schools participate,” she said. “The best part is meeting and watching Hawaii’s top spellers spell their way to success.

“Luckily,” she laughed, “as state coordinator I don’t have to get on stage and spell!”

Contestants in the Windward competition are: Lanikai Elementary’s Kalia Ferri and Hayley Johnson, LJA’s Chase Bridgman and Justin Shuman, St. Ann Model School’s Theresa Dao and Kelci Ige, St. Anthony School’s Courtney Huddleston and Haley Barnard, St. John Vianney’s Trentan Walker and Daphne Miller, St. Mark Lutheran’s Haley Pilien and Kara Iwamoto-Skelton, Hawaii Baptist Academy’s Alexa Yoo and Paige Oshiro, and Hongwanji Mission School’s Kacie Moku and Jacey Moriguchi.

The public is invited to attend the program. For more information, call 2610707, ext. 3080.
