‘The Village’ Raises One Fine Picnic Table

When a favorite picnic table at Lanikai beach started falling apart, a village of Kailua menehunes came to the rescue.
“The table was burned, missing a board, held together with string and generally falling apart,” explained Steve Holck, a beach park regular since he was 6 years old. Now a widower, he often sits there with friends and family or to “get perspective.”
“Unlike the other tables, it’s right on the water, and it was all buss’ up,” he said, “so I thought what would happen when the tourists come? The bolts were gone, then the wood was gone, and another piece was tied together with string.”
Simple solution: The city parks folks should take care, yeah? Holck said he inquired and was told there was no one available to fix it.
Quicker simple solution: Manpower from Holck’s children, grandchildren and friends. “A trip to Hardware Hawaii, some paint, some cutting and sanding, and a little elbow grease later, the table was better than new,” he declared proudly. “It came out nice, man, and we keep ‘em clean now.
“It was fun.”
A worn-out trash can also was repaired and secured with new screws by the menehune patrol, who included Sharon Holck, Quinn Methered, and Josiah, John and Kaila Lewis.
Holck recalls only one lapse in the team effort: “While I was cleaning up, they all disappeared to go play Frisbee on the field. Oh, well. What are grandpas for?”
