Don’t forget your cat this Halloween, advises Enchanted Lake resident Joan Harris of the Hawaii Cat Fanciers Association.

The group hosts its annual Halloween Cat Show from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 29 in McCoy Pavilion at Ala Moana Park, complete with a costume contest (with final entries due Oct. 22).

Top felines will receive ribbons as well as prizes.

“We will have four outstanding Mainland judges participating in the contest,” said Harris, who chairs the cat show and breeds Calico Persian cats. “They will be judging cats on personality, grooming and cleanliness.”

All types of cats are welcomed, from household cats to slim Siamese, and the club provides cages for the costume contest. The public can vote for their favorite Halloween cat and the best-decorated cage.

Oahu seems to be a “dog island,” some members have observed, but cats in general are the most popular, easy-to-care-for pet and their humans get all fired up about Halloween.

“We have seen some very creative ideas in costumes court jesters, princesses and pumpkins are very popular,” Harris noted.

There also will be free gifts for keiki and a “caterriffic” raffle drawing. “The whole day is to encourage people to keep their cats well-groomed, healthy and in shape.”

Admission is $4 and $2. For details on cat entries, call 261-4354 or 531-4891, or look for forms at local pet stores and veterinarian offices.
