While the prep athletics season is still months away, Kailua High School’s track and football field will be buzzing with excitement come July 9.
The field will play host to the Kailua/Kaneohe Relay For Life, an overnight rally designed to raise money for and awareness of cancer research with the ultimate goal of finding a cure for the disease that affects millions worldwide. Running from 6 p.m. July 9 until 6 a.m. July 10, the event will allow teams to camp out and walk in remembrance of those who lost their lives to cancer, as they raise money for American Cancer Society.
People can contribute to the cause in multiple ways, by donating money, volunteering time to help the event run smoothly, and forming or joining relay teams. At least one person from each team keeps moving during the event as a symbol of cancer’s relentless nature, and to remind everyone involved that cancer never sleeps.
At press time, 33 teams and 130 total participants have committed to the benefit, and nearly $16,000 has been raised toward the goal of $110,000. Informational and team captain meetings are set for 5 p.m. June 13 and 27 at Kaneohe Bay Yacht Club.
