Gallery ‘Iolani showcases the nature-inspired work of four accomplished artists in “Natural Selection,” which opens with a reception from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday on the Windward Community College campus.
The exhibit features Kahaluu artist Kc Grennan along with Mary Mitsuda, HPR’s Noe Tanigawa and Debbie Young, daughter of famed Hawaii artist John Young.
Gallery director Toni Martin said the artists were chosen for their reputations and because she felt their works complemented each other.
“It is a wonderful show,” she said. “They are contemporary artists who are working pretty much in the abstract medium.”
The artists chose the theme and created at least 10 pieces each especially for the exhibit. Grennan has “a very large sculpture” and several others in wood, copper and hot glass, while Mitsuda’s abstractions are based on flowers, water and other elements of nature. Tanigawa will display encaustic and varnish paintings, and Young will offer abstract interpretations of landscapes.
“I think a lot of people will be coming to this show because they are well-known enough that people want to see their work,” added Martin. “This is sort of an unveiling of their new work and some of it is quite different from what they have done before.”
The exhibit runs from Friday through March 4. Gallery hours are from 1 to 5 p.m. weekdays and Sunday, as well as 6 to 8 p.m. Mondays and Tuesdays. For more information, call 236-9150.
