Polynesian Cultural Center’s Haunted Lagoon, takes guests on a creepy canoe ride with a number of scares along the way, such as these headless ladies. The trip relates the tragic story of the Laie Lady, who wanders the waters in search for her missing son. Photo courtesy Polynesian Cultural Center.

From asylums to cauldrons to keiki costume contests, the Windward side will have it all for thrill-seekers this Halloween season.

High on the list is “The Asylum,” being created by Kalaheo High School seniors and parent Janet Ishikawa, who chairs the school’s 2012 Project Grad committee.

The scares that lurk in five different rooms remain a secret, Ishikawa explained, to preserve the thrill of the unexpected. “We’re trying to design it with the element of surprise. The students will do two rooms, which involved doctors and their patients with the patients taking over.” Ishikawa and her student helpers are experienced in the macabre, as they all worked together on Lanikai Elementary’s haunted houses as younger ghostlings. (Theatrical groups are welcome to advise or provide added drama. Call 779-7400 to volunteer.)

The Asylum will be open from 6 to 10 p.m. Oct. 21 and 22 at the school. Admission is $5, and refreshments (“good, normal food”) will be available to brave visitors.

“We want to make it really professional and we want you to have a really good time,” she said. Proceeds will help fund the alcohol-free graduation party next spring.
