Hundreds of old and new dancers and fans of Halau Mohala ‘Ilima came to a fun and informal 30th birthday party Aug. 5 for Mapuana and Kihei de Silva’s renowned hula troupe. All afternoon the Kokokahi YWCA practice hall was bursting with desserts, goodwill and three generations of dancers swaying away.

Symbolic of the halau’s vitality was a huge quilt, fashioned from halau T-shirts that included every shirt from its 28 consecutive appearances at the Merrie Monarch Festival.

Scrapbooks of each decade were shared, plus video of kupuna interviews, including Mapu’s with Auntie Maiki Aiu. “It was a wonderful party,” said student Lynn Cook, “and a great idea to get everybody together and celebrate.” For fall classes, call 261-0689.
