Del.icio.usMost Windward Oahu folks know about Susan Luehrs’ non-profit agency in Kahuku that matches service dogs with people who have disabilities. Not as well-known is it costs about $18,000 to breed, raise and successfully train a Hawaii FI-DO dog. The bills keep coming in. So the group held its very first major fundraiser Dec. 1 in Kailua at Cinnamon’s Family Restaurant. Guests who paid $50 were treated to delicious pupus, a carving station, wine tasting, dessert, caroling, a silent auction and demonstrations by the dogs. Founded in 1999, Hawaii FIDO Service Dogs also helps high-risk youths and State Hospital patients who help train the canines. The dogs are Labradoodles and other Lab mixes, golden retrievers, boxers and King Charles Spaniels.
