Like clockwork, you can count on Family Night four times a year at Kailua Elementary School. Math Carnival Night Nov. 20 drew 115 parents and kids from all grades who came for a free beef curry dinner followed by table games and activities that (shhh!) reinforce math skills and concepts. One popular activity, recalls curriculum coordinator Cindy Mahuku, was a tub of water with lots of cups for measuring different amounts. “They loved that!” she says. The faculty and a church youth group assisted at each station, so parents could relax and learn with their children that math is “not all work-sheets and flashcards.” Next up is Science Night March 5 with Art Kimura of Future Flight. They may just go to the moon.
