More than 200 guests plunked down a dollar to enter and enjoy Kailua Elementary School’s celebration of reading on Nov. 15. Admission came with a tasty beef stew dinner from the cafeteria folks, exciting board games about reading (similar to Candyland), prize drawings and most of all, time with Kailua’s favorite story guy, Wally Amos, who held forth in two shifts in the library under a screen that showcased the pages of his books. The evening was a carefully designed opportunity for families to “drop everything and romp into reading,” explains teacher Sandra Armstrong. The annual event is also known as Literacy Night, but that didn’t quite capture the mood: “It was a huge success,” declared principal Lanelle Hibbs.
