It’s a rare thing when a community thanks our state Department of Transportation for doing something right, but Le Jardin Academy was so delighted with its safer, smoother exit that it threw a roadside party and issued “degrees in mitigating traffic control” to DOT director Rod Haraga, deputy director Brennon Morioka and Sen. Fred Hemmings for making it happen. “The addition of a second left-turn lane onto Pali Highway from Kapaa Quarry Road has eased a longtime morning rush-hour bottleneck for Le Jardin families and others who use the road,” school development director Lauren Avery declared, “and we want to be the first to thank them.” The school held a reception March 9 next to the intersection that once backed up traffic 18 cars deep, and delayed parents and other Kailua-bound drivers by more than half an hour while waiting to exit the busy quarry road artery. Avery says Gov. Lingle also convinced the DOT to alter the timing on the light during the construction period for the rockslide mitigation project. She says the newly restriped and resurfaced intersection is already becoming a “really pleasurable experience.”
