Windward Volleyball League/PAL opened its season April 5 at Waimanalo Gym without playing any games. “This year was different,” said president Louanna Kaio. “We had prizes, team cheers, posters and dancing for the kids. And there were some nice cheers.” Now in its 11th year, the league has plenty to cheer about, too. There are nearly 400 players, 41 teams, 41 coaches, 41 assistant coaches and 41 team parents participating from Waimanalo, Kailua and Kaneohe. Games are at Kailua Gym Monday-Thursday, and at Waimanalo Saturdays through mid-June. It gives kids 7 to 14 who aren’t in other sports something to learn and do. Kaio has just two wishes: more board members (497-2956) and boost the age to 15-16.
