The flooding problem that has plagued Kahuku High and Intermediate School’s athletic field for decades may finally be nearing its end.

For years heavy rains have caused the fields to flood, resulting in mud and debris deposits in nearby buildings. Property damage as well as school closures and interruption of school sports and activities are a customary nuisance.

To combat the problem, Gov.

Linda Lingle has allotted $400,000 to the design of a project that will “provide students with a reliable and safe field for their sporting events and physical education classes.”

Past talks have led to consideration of moving the athletic field (which is below sea level) to higher ground, improving drainage flow in the area, or even moving the entire campus to a less vulnerable area. The overall project carries a projected completion date of September 2007 and a price tag of $4.2 million.

“All that is available now is the design money,” said Sanford Beppu, DOE finance officer.“The rest of the money will need to be appropriated.”
