It will be a homecoming of sorts this weekend for Kalaheo head girls basketball coach Ryan Hogue, when he takes his Mustangs to Hilo to compete in the Viking Classic Pre-Season Tournament.

Hogue, a former Mustang standout, played for Jeff Law at the University of Hawaii-Hilo.

“I’m looking forward to it,” said Hogue. “I lived there for five years, and I’ll get to see some people I know.”

Hogue, who is in his first year as the head girls coach, is hoping the trip will pay dividends down the road for his Mustangs, who took a 3-2 pre-season record into the weekend.

“It’s definitely a team-bonding experience,” he said. “It’s a good chance for the girls to come together, which they need to do, and it’s a chance to face good competition.”

Kalaheo will face Kohala at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in their first-round game at the Hilo Civic Center. Friday’s and Saturday’s matchups and game times will be determined by the outcome of Thursday’s encounter.

Kona and Honokaa are among the teams competing in the tournament.
