Allene Somera’s meteoric rise in prep wrestling is no surprise to the person who knows her best, twin sister Cydnee. Since they were 8, the sisters had used their near-telepathic communication on local in-line hockey rinks with positive results.

“She picks up really quick, and whatever she does, she does with passion,” Cydnee said.“She doesn’t want to waste her time with losing.”

Allene’s competitive flair has already taken her a long way in wrestling, which she joined at 15 after enrolling at Kailua High School. She recently captured an OIA title in the 98-pound weight class and followed that up with a fourth-place at the state wrestling championships last month. Her prowess on the mat came at a price, however, as she suffered a mild concussion at states, leaving her in recovery mode. She sees the doctor this week to learn when she can return to competitive sports.

“I hit the mat pretty hard, and the doctor told my parents that I couldn’t wrestle

until next season,“said Allene, a junior.“When I get back to the doctor, she’ll tell me what I can or can’t do, but my speech is getting better.”

To those who know her, there isn’t much Allene can’t do. She’s become a student of wrestling under the coaching of Charles Kaulukukui (Kailua) and Scott Yorimoto (Kalaheo). Last summer, she went to South Dakota and the national tournament as a member of Team Hawaii, a local all-star team, and finished ninth. She also credits her father, Sid, a former Golden Gloves boxer, with inspiring her work ethic.

“I’m pretty competitive - I’m kind of like my dad,“said Allene, who is being recruited by colleges in the Midwest. “He was driven also. I want to be tops in my weight class. That’s what drives me to work harder. I can’t picture anyone else winning. I chose wrestling because I wanted to try something new and because my brother (Travis) had wrestled also.

“My family (including mom Tanya) and boyfriend (Roman Scimeca) have had the biggest impact on my life because they support me in everything I do.”

For her part, Cydnee is trying to make a go of ice hockey in addition to playing inline. She currently trains at Ice Palace, with hopes of making the team at Dartmouth in college.

“I hate that she quit hockey (full time), but it’s her choice,” Cydnee said. “She’s good in wrestling, too.”
