Kailua, Castle Girls Look Beyond OIA Post-season

Kailua and Castle high schools are among the Division II teams hoping to qualify for the upcoming girls state basketball tournament this week when they take part in the OIA’s post-season.

The top three finishers in the the tourney will earn berths in the Hawaiian Airlines DII State Basketball Tournament May 15 to 18.

The Surfriders, who finished their regular season with an 8-4 record en route to earning the East’s second seed, take on Waianae (third seed in West) in a first-round game at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Campbell High. Playoffs continue Wednesday with the title game at 5:30 p.m. Friday at McKinley. OC 16 will televise that game statewide.


Kailua is led by Ashley Jacobs, whose 10.7 points-per-game average and 21 three-pointers lead the team. Teammate Kristen Corrales is also among Division II leaders from behind the arc, having made 16 three-pointers heading into last weekend.

In the other bracket, Castle (7-5), the East’s third seed, will meet the West’s second seed, Waialua, in a first-round game at 5 p.m. Tuesday at McKinley. The Knights are led by Candy Ames, Marisa Ameperosa, Niki Kobashigawa, Sarah Phromisiri and Kori Berinobis. Castle, which beat Waialua by 14 in March, seeks a second straight state appearance.
