Since going to the spread offense a decade ago, the Castle High offense has been nothing less than prolific. Validation has come by way of the post-season awards the Knights have racked up and that continued recently with the announcement that quarterback Jaymason Lee was named OIA East Red Offensive Player of the Year in a vote of league coaches.

Lee threw for 1,512 yards and 10 touchdowns in leading the Knights to a 5-4 overall record this fall. As a junior, Lee also posted huge numbers, throwing for 2,305 yards and 28 touchdowns. His honor also marks the second time in three years that Castle had the league’s Offensive Player of the Year. Shaydon Kehano earned the award in 2008.

Knights teammates Joshua Kong and Dustin Telefoni also were named to the Red East First Team Offense at wide receiver and lineman, respectively. Kong caught 34 passes for 569 yards, an average of 16.7 yards per reception. Lafaele Paselio made the Second Team as an offensive lineman.

Defensively, senior Moses Alimoot was the Knights’lone First Team selection, while linebacker Cy Pana earned Second Team recognition. Jacques Hough, Chris Finau, Fa’a Lakatani, Makana Tilton, Arthur Redditt and Jacob Martin were named to the Honorable Mention team.

Kahuku, which won the Red East regular-season crown (6-0) and won all 10 of its games overall before an eligibility issue eliminated it from the post-season (and led to a forfeit of the OIA title game), placed Aofaga Wily (running back), Punga Vea (wide receiver), Christopher Thee (offensive lineman), Steven Siilata (OL), Jamal Napeahi (OL) and Kamalani Aalona (OL) on the First Team Offense. Wily, who is only a sophomore, was the second leading rusher in the state having covered 1,175 yards to go with 17 touch-downs.

Kahuku also placed six players - Nicholas Acoba (DL), Dallin Muti (DL), Ben Mamea (LB), Benetton Fonua (LB), Tigi Hill (DB) and Trayson Medeiros (DB) - on the Red East’s First Team defense.

Red Raider head coach Reggie Torres was chosen as the league’s Coach of the Year.

Wide Receiver Eric Lum (922 receiving yards, 9 TD receptions) was a First Team Offensive selection from Kailua, which finished 4-2 in the Red East (second behind Kahuku) under coach Gary Rosolowich. Kila Zuttermeister was the Surfriders’ lone First Team selection on defense. Kahaku Iaea (QB), Piulu Kahapea (OL), Chevy Mikaele (DL), Ethan Mahaulu (DL) and John Poggi (DB) made the Second Team.
