Hawaii Pacific University freshman Skye Savini didn’t need to make a recruiting visit to Oahu to know she wanted to be a Sea Warrior. She was sold on HPU as soon as she knew they were sold on her.

“As soon as I heard Hawaii, I’d pretty much made up my mind,” said Savini, a Los Angeles native who is already a standout on the HPU women’s basketball team.“At first I wasn’t sure how serious they were about me. Of course I was going to choose Hawaii over the cold.”

Asked which schools were in the running for her, Savini drew a blank.“I can’t remember their names now,“she said.

Savini starred at Saint Paul High School and is only six games into her college career. But she’s already had a major impact on the Sea Warriors with her versatility and athleticism. She’s currently second on the team in minutes per game (27.6) and is tied with senior Jazzmin Awa-Williams as leading scorer at 10.2 points per game. She also leads in shooting percentage (.478) and steals (16). Savini recently took time to answer some questions for MidWeek‘s Windward Islander.

What’s the best part about being an HPU student-athlete? You never run out of things to do - there’s always somewhere to be and someone to talk to. It fills up your day.

What is your earliest sports-related memory? When I was playing tee-ball. I remember that I wasn’t very good at it. I played until middle school. Softball used to be my main sport.

What part of your game did you concentrate on most in the off-season? My main focus this past off-season was staying in shape and working on ball-handling.

What’s been your biggest adjustment from high school to competing at the college level? Probably not being able to be with my family and not being able to be fed all of the time. I can’t just go home and eat anymore.

What is your least-favorite household chore? Cleaning the bathroom - having to scrub the entire bathroom, period.

Are you the life of the party or the girl who stands by and listens? I think I’m somewhere in between. I like to be at the party, but not be the party.

What site do you frequent the most when on the Internet? Facebook, of course. I like that it’s easy for me to see what’s going on with everyone back home and being able to talk to them or look at pictures.

What movie could you watch over and over? Forgetting Sarah Marshall. I love that it’s so funny. It’s the funniest movie ever.

What is currently in your iPod? A lot of old songs. I listen to a lot of Taylor Swift. I love R&B.

Who’s had the biggest impact on your life? My mother (Yolanda Noelani Mativa). She raised me on her own and taught me everything that I know.

What celebrity would you choose for a Saturday night date? (Actor) Taylor Lautner.

How many text messages do you send/receive a day? About 100, if not more. I text my boyfriend (Niko Sala) the most.

You’re stuck on Kahoolawe with an endless supply of one food. What would it be? The hot steak sub sandwich at Blazin’ Steaks. They only sell them at Ala Moana on Atkinson. Every weekend I hop on the bus and go there.
