Justin Wagar has been named head women’s soccer coach at Brigham Young University-Hawaii, the school announced recently.

The school will boast a women’s soccer program for the first time during the 2006-07 academic year. Wagar, a former standout as a men’s player at BYUH, spent the past season as the interim head coach of the women’s soccer team at Utah Valley State College, where he took over just two weeks before the start of the season when the previous coach abruptly resigned. Despite losing his star player midway through the season, Wagar led the Wolverines to a 7-12 record and a second place finish at the United Soccer Conference tournament. Wagar had an earlier stint as an assistant at UVSC for two years.

BYU-Hawaii athletic director Ken Wagner welcomed the return of Wagar, who began playing for BYUH in 1998.

“We’re excited to have him,” Wagner said. “He’s energetic and talented, and we look forward to having him develop a strong program here.”

Added Wagar: “I believe that Hawaii is really a soccer paradise,” he said. “There is really no place like Hawaii to play soccer. The whole state has a great soccer atmosphere. I really look forward to building the program at BYU-Hawaii.”
