Brittany Hawn

Softball may be Brittany Hawn’s favorite sport, but her Castle basketball teammates never underestimate her eagerness to get on the floor. Neither will Knights’coach Jeff McKeown.

In her first game last season as a freshman, when Hawn was inserted into the game, she forgot to check into the official scorer’s table and made the substitution hockey style - on the fly, as they say.

“Coach said, ‘Hawn get in there,’ and I just ran in,” Hawn relayed with a laugh. “With the excitement I was feeling, I didn’t even think about it.We almost got a technical (foul). Coach couldn’t believe I did that. He said, ‘Haven’t you ever played (organized) basketball before?’”

Hawn is far more settled in with the girls basketball team this season, and her steady play is one of the reasons the Knights are off to a 3-2 start in the OIA Red East Conference. Castle opened with wins over Kalani (51-36), Kailua (50-28) and McKinley (50-48) before dropping a road game to defending OIA champion Farrington (50-42) Dec. 26 and one at home to Moanalua (44-42) last week.

Hawn is averaging 8.1 points per game to date. She recently took some time away from the practice floor to answer some questions for

MidWeek‘s Windward Oahu Islander.

Who’s had the biggest influence on you in your life? I’m religious, so I always look to God for my support in everything. He’s my biggest influence.

The Knights are off to a great start so far this season. What’s made the difference? We’ve come together as a team now.We were playing more as individuals before. We’re putting our strengths together now.

What aspect of your game do you work hard to improve on for this season? I wanted to improve my shooting. It’s been improving lately.I played softball in the summer, so I’ve been making up for the time I lost by spending extra time shooting before and after practice.

You finish the sentence: The older generation is clueless about ...Teenagers, period.

They don’t always understand where we’re coming from.

Who is your most competitive teammate in practice? It would be between Cailee Awa or Nicole Aberilla. They always try to tell us to pick it up. They motivate us during the drills, and they make sure everyone is in the right spots.

What is your least favorite household chore? I’d have to say cleaning the bathroom. There’s so many things to clean - the bathroom sink, the bathtub, the toilet ... It’s a dirty job, but it’s your home. It’s still better than cleaning a public bathroom!

What movie could you watch over and over again? Once Were Warriors. It’s a movie about Polynesia and New Zealand, and it shows what this lady went through. By the end, she learns how to bounce back (from adversity).

What’s currently in your iPod? Rebel Soldier,Lil Wayne, Next Generation and Mariah Carey.

High school students are known to unwind by playing video games. What do you like to play? I just got the Wii system for Christmas. I’ve been playing boxing a lot.I also have Play Station 2. I like to play Madden 2009. My favorite team is the Dallas Cowboys. I’m always that team.

You finish the sentence: In 10 years I will be ... Hopefully, I’ll still be in college. I’d like to be an athletic trainer.

You are stuck on the Island of Kahoolawe. You have an endless supply of one food. What would it be? Saimin. I can eat it over and over again, and I never get sick of it.

If you could have your pick, who would be your “celebrity date” for Saturday night? I’d have to say Paul Walker from Fast and Furious. He’s so handsome.
