Kailua High bowler Austin Patacsil has too much energy - even when not in season, he managed to practice a couple of times a week. With Kailua having begun preparing for the 2010 season last week, he’s up to four practices a week, three of them on his own.

“I’m definitely getting excited,” said Patacsil, a senior, who finished 10th at the state bowling championships last October. “I’ve been practicing more and trying to do all my homework so I have time to go to practice (more often).”

Patacsil is looking to complete what has been a rewarding prep carer to date with a strong finish over the next few months. The OIA Eastern Division Player of the Year as a sophomore in 2008, he finished fifth overall in the league a year ago in addition to his 10th-place finish at the state tournament.

The Surfriders finished second in the OIA East last year to Kalani and have high hopes again this fall. Patacsil took some time away from the lanes to answer some questions from MidWeek’s Windward Islander.

What’s your earliest sports-related memory?? My first 200 (series) was in 2000, I think, at Waialae Bowling Center, when I was about 7. It was from out of nowhere. I was averaging about 150 or 160 back then and all of the sudden, a 200! After that, I had a lot of confidence, and it made me want to practice more so I could bowl a 200 again.

When did bowling become an area off focus in your life?? I started taking bowling more seriously when I got to high school. After seeing the competition - we had two other really good bowlers (in Justin Lau and Tyler Noquez) - and I wanted to try to be the best.

What areas off your game are you focusing on during the off-season?? I think my approach. I’m always excited, and I walk fast. My coaches are always telling me to calm down and not to rush it.

Who’s had the biggest impact on you in your life? I think my parents (Randall and Gail). They’ve been to every tournament I’ve ever been in, whether weekly or the state, to support me - even though it means siting there for hours sometimes.

What Internet site do you frequent the most?? Facebook. I like that I can keep in touch with all of my friends, even though they might not be living on the island.

What is your least favorite household chore?? Probably washing dishes. There’s a lot to wash, and it’s time-consuming, especially when you have a lot of homework.

What movie could you watch over and over? Transformers. I like the cars.

Who is your most-competitive teammate at Kailua’s practices?? Tyler (Noquez) and Justin (Lau). We try our best to challenge each other. It’s fun practicing with people who are good.

What’s in your iPod?? I like to listen to Hawaiian and R&B music.

Do you play video games? What systems do you have? No. I’d rather get out of the house and go to the beach or something. I also like to play basketball.

How many text messages do you send/receive a day?

Maybe, like, 200. On some days, there are more.

If you could have your pick,, what celebrity would you choose as your prom date?? My girlfriend Sarah (Vidad).

You’re stuck on the island off Kahoolawe.. You can have an endless supply off one food.. What would it be?? The loco moco. It can be from anywhere. It doesn’t mater.
